An offshoot of Ashtanga Yoga, it has many of the same qualities and benefits, including building internal heat, increased stamina, strength, and flexibility, as well as stress reduction. Teachers design their own sequences, while students synchronize their breath with their movement. The original Power Yoga was developed and founded by Beryl Bender Birch, but is now a term used to describe many vigorous vinyasa styles.
What is power yoga? The answer varies depending on the studio or teacher. For me, it means moving dynamically (and continuously) with your breath for a heating, and performing rhythmic exercises in any random sequence to obtain a total body work out
Since it involves flowing through many poses in rapid succession, it can be challenging for yoga newbies who aren’t super familiar with the poses .
There is increasing evidence that yoga and meditation can benefit your mind and body in many ways. Yoga has been linked to many physical and mental benefits, including increasing flexibility and strength, toning muscles, and lowering stress and anxiety. Research has found that yoga is gaining popularity across the world and not just among those trying to become healthier and slimmer. Perhaps, the incredible bond between Power Yoga and weight loss is receiving a lot of attention with many celebrities, including Sara Ali Khan, switching to this form of exercise to lose weight and keep themselves fit.
What are its health benefits and how does it help with weight loss?
Power yoga is a fitness-based vinyasa practice that began in the 1990s in America. It is a branch of Ashtanga Yoga and shares many qualities and benefits. This form of yoga is becoming increasingly popular across the globe, especially among people trying to shed those extra pounds.
Also referred to as superficial gym yoga, enthusiasts of power yoga say it can give your whole body a good workout. Some amazing health benefits of power yoga are:
- It can help you burn more calories than the traditional forms of yoga as it is a vigorous form of exercise, aiding in weight loss.
- It helps strengthen your gluteal muscles and tone the entire body.
- It boosts your metabolism.
- It builds strength, enhances stamina, flexibility and posture.
- It improves your mental focus and relieves tension and stress.
Before you take the plunge, keep in mind that power yoga is hard work and is not for everyone. In general, you should avoid it if:
- You aren’t in good shape. Power yoga, at a minimum, requires you to be moderately fit—otherwise, the physically intensive asanas (poses) can end up doing more harm than good.
- You are pregnant. Certain asanas can potentially cause complications during pregnancy. (Instead, try prenatal yoga classes, which are gentle and designed for pregnant women.)
- You suffer from a chronic physical ailment such as diabetes or arthritis
Power yoga poses for weight loss
There are different forms of power yoga that promote weight loss – such as Basic Squats, Standing to Leg Raise, Abdominal Churning, Small Dog to Plank, etc. For instance, doing abdominal churning can help tone the lower body, while the Standing to Leg Raise is a great exercise to for losing weight and toning the problem areas, especially around the belly and midsection.
Many gyms and health clubs, in particular, have taken up the term as a way to let their clientele know that this is serious exercise. If you decide to try a power yoga class, prepare to work hard and to work up a sweat.
Whether you’re trying to shed a few pounds or improve your health, adding power yoga to your fitness routine can help you achieve your goals. But you should avoid doing power yoga if you are pregnant, suffering from a chronic condition such as diabetes or arthritis, or have had recent surgery.
